Hashima Island

15 kilometers to the Southwest of Nagasaki lies Hashima island, 4 kilometers off the coast of Kyushu, the southernmost of the four mainland islands of Japan. The Mitsubishi company purchased the island in 1890 and constructed a 199 meter vertical mining shaft. For the next 85 years the mines operated, bringing thousands of tons of high quality coal from below the sea bed to the surface.

The island reached it’s peak population of 5259 in 1959 and has a total area of 15.6 acres, but was abandoned in 1974.
