legitimizing the elevator

Alright, all you doubters. Here’s a mainstream article about the space elevator.

The article mentions a length of 100,000 km. That’s one hell of an elevator ride. Like I said before, I hope they have a bar. :-)

I read Clarke's novel Fountains of Paradise some time ago about the space elevator. In it he posited a machine that converted material from asteroids into a continuous cable. I wonder how they're actually going to manufacture the cable for this one?

On the company's Web site, they mention using carbon nanotubes. Whatever they use, it's got to be strong enough to deal with an astronomical (no pun intended) amount of heat from friction.
