numbers

I stumbled across this page of baseball pitcher stats-Support-Neutral W/L Report: September 6, 2003-that I have to say, I still don’t quite understand. I mean, I understand the concept in the abstract, but I don’t quite get how the stats are calculated. I’ve read the short explanation a couple times. I didn’t even attempt the long explanation.

Nonetheless, there are some interesting stats in the list, and some very interesting categories. For instance, on the list of the 20 ML Starters most helped by their relievers (ranked by bullpen support), guess who is third—Freddie Garcia, and Joel Pineiro is seventh.

Not surprisingly, number one for Team Bullpen Support Totals (teams ranked by Bullpen Support of starting pitchers): Seattle.

Most curious to me—the Mariners best three pitchers (as of the posting of that page) are Ryan Franklin, Freddie Garcia, and Gil Meche in that order.

I don't think I get it, either. Seems like an interesting idea, but I have to conclude, at least for the moment, that their formulas are hooey. Well, not hooey, I guess; let's say "flawed." I mean, it seems to me we already have a stat that measures a pitcher's success independent of his wins and losses: Earned Run Average. The ERA doesn't seem to be figured into this "expected wins" thingy. I will say that I agree that Ryan Franklin is much better than his record would indicate (witness his 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay the other night); but if he were really the M's best starter, I think his ERA would reflect that.
