the elevator, again

It makes sense, given the recent shuttle disaster, but once again the space elevator is in the news. They’ve found a second possible location, this one near Perth. And just because, how ‘bout an explanation for how the concept works. The one question I have—what will they make the cable from. Everything I’ve read so far refers only to a “super-strong carbon-based material.” Have they made this material? Will it support the stresses/heat that it’ll be exposed to? And if they have, why don’t they share with the shuttle, which clearly needs a better heat-protection mechanism.
