the return of the elevator

Yes, I’ve written about this before. Now the story gets even better. Congress has given HighLift Systems (based here in Seattle) a grant ($50 mil or some such figure) to explore the actual feasabilty of constructing the space elevator. Oh man, this is a dream come true. I can’t wait. Plus, imagine the ride. They could have a bar, a lounge, some cheesy jazz. And as you rise, you’d get lighter. Probably by 60k feet or so you’d need to strap into your seat…. sigh

Wow, talk about fantastic fun. Now we just need a destination in space (and no, the ISS will not cut it…

And now for something completely different
This short essay about the diffculty of hitting home runs (mathematically speaking) is pretty interesting. I get the feeling this is just an abstract—I wish the whole thing was here…

A "space elevator"? I keep hearing Doctor Evil saying it, just like "sharks with laser beams attatched to their heads." Just as ridiculous. The Mulder in me says its just a ploy to hide where government money really goes. That 150 million dollar rocket that just blew up? Who knows, mayble it was a tin can that cost 10 million and the other 140 million went who knows where. Accountability? Just say "we lost the rocket. it blew up. oh well." Sigh.
